Rosie Kelly Workshop

 This workshop was called COMPOSITIONAL PLAY.  We worked on arches textwove torn into 8x6 sheets.  We used a variety of tools.  This first one was started with a squeeze bottle with a metal tip and sumi ink with a continuous line and then I used gesso, watercolor and walnut ink for texture.

 This one started with gesso then the watercolor I embossed the bottom strip

 Experimenting with a large brush first.  It still needs a third element -I'll try adding a block of text in maybe black.

 Another with the squeeze bottle and ink. In the critique, many thought this was a fiinished piece.  Not sure about that!  But I'm not sure where I could add text or an embossed subtle shape in the white area?  Or I'm thinking I could add another loop down into the right white space...

 Experimenting with dirty water for the background words.  Tried Rosies technique of using a variety of lettering sizes and styles.  I'm not sure if I'll try making a book with several of the pages.

I'll post more photos tomorrow when I take pictures of my work with daytime light.  This one day workshop was wonderful!   We worked on text wove paper and used ink out of a little tiny squeeze bottle, and gesso, watercolor, walnut ink, and then experimented with lettering on the pages.  They could be used as a book or a finished piece.

 The top two are Sawyer, a few days old.  The rest are at about two months.  We met in Kalamazoo at the Childrens Museum.

Heather Held Workshop

I only took a couple of photos of my work in the workshop!  I forgot to take more before posting.  Will add more later. We worked with the pointed pen and Heather worked with us in small steps so everyone had great success in the process.

Artprize Winner from 2012- Elephants

 This huge three paneled piece was displayed in one of the first buildings we visited to get our map.  It said it was done with graphite pencil and "an old sock".  It's a huge piece which a person who was speaking about it said that the artist worked on it while it was being looked at last year and as she worked and added more, she started drawing more and more and even off the paper onto the wall!  The video showed how they were cutting out the walls and removing even the metal studs to save her work!  You can see the tree extends over the elephant!  The detail and the dark and light values make it so beautiful.

Family visit in Grand Rapids to see ARTPRIZE

 Artprize is a three week display of artwork from all over the world and is set up throughout the whole city. There were 1250 exhibitors of all types of art including painting, wood carving, sculpture, pencil, mixed media, everything you could think of.  We enjoy going even though we could never see it all.  The weather was perfect this year and it's always great to see our Grandson and get the family together.

 This art piece was in a shoe store and is made up of squares of leather from their shoe samples and depicts the city of Grand Rapids.

 I loved the building reflections on the glass windows.  The city is beautiful right on the river.
